Credit Report Error Checklist
Print this page and go through each of your three reports with a pen in hand.
Personal information
- ☐ Name spelled correctly — and no names that aren’t yours
- ☐ Current and past addresses are ones you actually lived at
- ☐ Social Security number and date of birth are correct
- ☐ Employers listed are yours
Every account
- ☐ The account belongs to you (not a relative or someone with a similar name)
- ☐ You are listed correctly — individual, joint or authorized user
- ☐ Open/closed status is right, and “closed by consumer” vs. “closed by grantor” is right
- ☐ Balance, credit limit and high balance match your statements
- ☐ Payment history matches your records month by month
- ☐ Date opened and date of first delinquency are correct
- ☐ Accounts included in bankruptcy show a $0 balance
- ☐ No account appears twice
Collections and charge-offs
- ☐ You recognize the original creditor
- ☐ Only one entry (original creditor or collector) shows a balance
- ☐ The date of first delinquency matches the original account
- ☐ Paid medical collections, or medical collections under $500, are not listed
- ☐ Disputed debts are marked as disputed
- ☐ Nothing is older than 7 years (plus 180 days) from the original delinquency
Public records
- ☐ Any bankruptcy shows the correct chapter, dates and status
- ☐ No civil judgments or tax liens appear (the bureaus generally stopped reporting them)
Inquiries
- ☐ You authorized every hard inquiry
