The laws that protect your credit weren’t written for lawyers alone. They were written for you.

The Consumer Credit Protection Act

In 1968, Congress passed the Consumer Credit Protection Act (15 U.S.C. § 1601 et seq.) to protect Americans in the credit system. Over the years it has grown into a family of laws, each added as its own title:

TitleLawWhat it protects
ITruth in Lending ActClear disclosure of the cost of credit; billing error rights
IIIRestrictions on GarnishmentLimits on how much of your wages can be garnished
IVCredit Repair Organizations ActYour rights when you hire credit repair help
VIFair Credit Reporting ActAccurate, fair and private credit reports
VIIEqual Credit Opportunity ActFreedom from discrimination in credit
VIIIFair Debt Collection Practices ActFair treatment by debt collectors
IXElectronic Fund Transfer ActProtections for debit cards and electronic payments

Two other federal laws round out the library: the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, which governs mortgage servicers, and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which protects those who serve.

This library is educational and is not legal advice. Laws change and apply differently to different facts. If you believe your rights were violated, consider speaking with a consumer attorney.
